Choosing the right paddle is a great start
With so many models available, choosing your first pickleball paddle can seem complicated. However, a few simple criteria are enough to find the paddle suited to your level and style of play.
1. Thickness: 13 mm or 16 mm?
This is the most important criterion. A 13 mm paddle is thinner and more responsive: it offers more power, ideal for offensive players. A 16 mm paddle absorbs vibrations better and offers better control, perfect for placing the ball with precision and for rallies near the net.
2. Weight
A lightweight paddle (about 200 to 220 g) is quick to handle and causes less arm fatigue: it is the right choice for beginners or children. A heavier paddle provides stability and power but requires an arm that is already somewhat trained.
3. Surface materials
Fiberglass offers a flexible and forgiving surface, perfect for learning. Carbon (T700, 3K) provides a stiffer surface that grips the ball better: more spin, more precision. This is the choice for intermediate and advanced players.
4. The grip
It should fit comfortably in your hand, neither too thin nor too thick. An overgrip can adjust the thickness and improve the hold, especially when sweating.
